Project Cosmopolitana

In the 1950’s and 60’s workers and families came from around the globe to work Australia. They were drawn to Cooma NSW and to the Canberra region, forming bonds and belonging, pioneering cultural diversity in Australia. Big hART’s Project Cosmopolitana captures stories from this time, along with those that form the contemporary landscape of the region. Combined, these stories are a defining point in Australia’s national fabric and a timely provocation to discussions around migration and cultural diversity in Australia.

A creative process of story collection, oral history, recipe collection, movement workshops and archival image research culminated in September 2015 in a musical and documentary theatre work Ghosts in the Scheme, a co-production with Canberra Theatre Centre.

Now, the project has moved into development for Cosmopolitana – a stylised concert showcasing the dynamic music created over two years in Cooma by collaborating artists Mikelangelo and the Black Sea Gentlemen, and sharing the collected stories that have inspired the songwriting. The show is a melding of a cosmopolitan club, concert, theatre show, and variety night, celebrating the fact that ‘we all come from somewhere else’.

Cosmopolitana is in development to tour late 2016 / early 2017.

The project being built on the foundations of strong collaborations with South East ArtsMikelangelo & the Black Sea GentlemenCanberra Theatre Centre and Cooma Monaro Shire Council.
