A series of short films from Big hART’s Pilbara based Yijala Yala project
This disc set contains 21 short films made during Big hART’s award winning project Yijala Yala. Based in Roebourne WA, Yijala Yala began in 2010 after senior women Elders invited Big hART to co-create a project with community that spoke about the ‘new’ Roebourne. Meaning “now” in both local languages Ngarluma and Yindjibarndi, Yijala Yala foused on intercultural art making and intergenerational collaboration to create films, theatre, music, exhibitions, interactive comics, apps and more.
The result was a range of processes, experiences and artworks that built skills and pride in the community, broke down prejudices and redefined cultural heritage. These films present a glimpse into the process and the art, and capture the dynamic and creative face of Roebourne, the cultural heart of Australia’s Pilbara region.
